At last, we’re off in a north-easterly direction! In Tana, we board a small plane that takes us to one of Madagascar’s smallest airports, in Maroantsetra. The town lies right on Antongil Bay, which separates Mananara from Masoala. From there, we set off by boat into the Masoala rainforest, Madagascar’s largest contiguous forest area, covering over 2,100 km². We’re staying in a simple hotel right on the beach, with the rainforest behind us. Unfortunately, it hasn’t rained here for two weeks, but temperatures have remained above 35°C throughout – which isn’t ideal for reptiles. Nevertheless, we’ve still managed to make a few initial discoveries.
